What is the difference between expectations and requirements?

In project management, we continue to hear about requirements. PMBOK Guide has a process called Collect Requirements. The SUKAD CAMMP Model has a stage labeled Requirements Stage.

Well, this is good and necessary but is it enough?

The challenge with requirements is that it is often limited to “we need x, y, and z”. However, is x,y, and z what is really needed for the organization to achieve its objectives? Needs and expectations might sound like other terms for ‘requirements’ but they are not.

Expectations are often linked to a mindset, an outcome, a result but it is might not be easy for a client to express their expectations properly and convert them onto requirements.
