What is the professional certifications impact on professional project management? (5/6 PM challenges)

This is fifth of six project management challenges that are impacting the practice of project management and as a domain.

The last challenge that we discussed, dealt with the need for specialized project management, rather than generic practice across all types of projects and domains. Building on this last challenge, this one is probably the most difficult challenge to write about and the most controversial yet we believe it is quite essential to discuss. We have already written a few articles on certifications, particularly the Project Management Professional (PMP), but we address here from a different angle – the impact of certification on the domain and practices of project management. Is project management industry specific? (4/6 PM challenges)

This is the fourth, of six, articles on project management challenges. Article 1 discussed is project management simple, article 2 focused on is project management bureaucratic, and article 3 presented the view on one size fits all in project management environment.

In the last post we discuss the concept that project management cannot be one size fits all. In that post we talked about PMBOK and crossing domains. In today’s article we discuss a challenge that we observe in working with individuals and organizations in our region and we also observe from numerous online discussions. We think that, because of over simplification of project management, some practitioners believe that one standard works everywhere, in different industries, different functions, and different size projects and that one approach is all we need. Is project management bureaucratic? (2/6 PM challenges)

We continue our series on Project Management Challenges and opportunities. All of these articles are from a published eBook.This is second of six challenges.

Another challenge that we observe, which limits the growth of the proper practice of project management, is the perception that it is bureaucratic. “Do you really want me to do all of this paperwork? I could be done with my project by then.” Another comment: “We do not have time to plan.” A recent comment: “Wow, we need an army of people to do all of this”!  Continue reading
